Most of the cell’s DNA is located in the nucleus but a small amount is in the mitochondria. This is called mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). mtDNA is in the form of small circular molecules that are not bound to proteins. mtDNA has 37 genes, which are essential for the mitochondrion to function normally.
